So here we are - at the moment the dreaded Band Biography has to be written. They have
managed to avoid it so far, but cannot put off any longer...
It all began way back in the summer of 2004 when the founding members; Cherry and Billy
took a long, hard look at the band they had previously been in for seven years. Although
they had achieved a reasonable amount of success with an Independent Record deal,
records in the shops and even a video on the tele, they had not managed to break through
into the big time. In its simplest definition, this meant they still had day jobs!
When you continuously fail to achieve an ambition, or continuously get rejected despite
giving it everything you've got, you have to ask yourself the honest question - why? This
question is usually answered by blaming everyone else; 'they don't know what they are
talking about', or 'this country is not ready for us', or a particular favorite 'the majors
just aren't signing anybody'. For the first time, Cherry and Billy arrived at the obvious
conclusion; 'this band just hasn't got what it takes - a product that's wanted'.
And so it was ended. They had no band, no songs, no deal, just a clean sheet of paper
and an even stronger desire to get to where they wanted to be. So, they sat down and
wrote out a set of rules for the band they wanted to put together. And here they are, the
foundations of the creation that is Sucking Diesel:
1. THE SONGS
Should be - melodic, powerful, high energy, well crafted and entertaining
2. THE SOUND
Not sure how it will develop but it needs to be compatible with the current
music scene.
3. THE NAME
Has to reflect the music and be difficult to swallow
4. THE IMAGE
Very strong, a bit different, and connected to the music
5. THE VIBE
A great band to be in, great fun, and everyone pulling together
6. THE GOAL
Global chart domination, loads of money, and living the Rock and Roll dream
And so, the hard part was done, all they had to do now was find the rest of the band and
make it happen. First thing they did ( apart from panic ) was to write three songs that
they could use to convey to potential members the vision. These three songs have survived
and are on the bands debut album, they are: High Heeled Honey, Liquor and Iconic.
First member to join is now the ex drummer. As soon as he was on board, they
hired a session guitarist by the name of Frank, went in the studio and recorded the
first demo under the name of Sucking Diesel. This was in October of 2004.The sound
wasn't quite there yet, but it was good enough to attract the attention of top notch guitarist
and song writer - Craig, who joined shortly afterwards ( thank you the Internet ). Craig
was the magic ingredient and the sound that is now Sucking Diesel was born!
They worked hard to write more songs and to put the set together. All went well and in
no time they were gigging. The reaction from the audiences was amazing. Wherever
they played they were asked to play again. And then in true Spinal Tap fashion, the
drummer exploded! ( Almost ) Without going into too much detail, he was fired and had to be
replaced. In stepped Helen and the rest is history - or will be one day.
In August of 2005, Sucking Diesel reached the finals of a National band competition.
Despite their natural distrust of such events, they took part in the final hosted by
Hard Rock Cafe and sponsored by EA Games, only to finish second. However,
Sucking Diesel received its first national press review with some striking live
photos.
Now in November 2005, Sucking Diesel have just had their first radio play and
are currently promoting to all the University local radio stations.
And that's it for now. Not much I guess, but the only thing Sucking Diesel has not
had the time to accumulate during its first year is - History. One interesting fact
before I finish, Sucking Diesel have never dropped a song. The first 13 songs they
wrote are all on the debut album - Trailer Trash, and we love them all.
Thanks for listening. Written and compiled by Eugene Lush
President of the UK Sucking Diesel fan club.
